Eugene > Does anybody know how easy it is to get catalog data from major stores? > Are they willing to share this information or it's considered > confidential information? Does the catalog data include bar code number?
Many major stores require their suppliers to upload catalog information to the various Product Catalogs - QRS (now Inovis), GE, etc.. There IS a charge to access the data, which is paid by the supplier. The suppliers pay 2 ways. To upload the data & store it, then again for each major store that accesses the data. In some cases, the various divisions are counted seperately (May, Saks, etc..) All this is being changed as UCCNet steps into the picture. Currently, NONE of our clients are on UCCNet (ECCC in Canada), but are being pressured by some of the major stores (Home Depot, etc). As usual, everything is in flux, and our clients pay thousands of dollars and waste time as the requirements change. One client was 'encouraged' to join ECCC. Then the project was put on hold. Membership to UCCNet or ECCC is expensive (especially if they are doing zero). Distributors have to get permission from manufacturers and divisions have to prove their corporate relationships... what a mess. It would probably be easier for you to get the info directly from the manufacturers.. The Bar code number (UPC number) is an integral REQUIRED field for these catalogs. The old UPC numbers were 12 digits (in North America), and are being replaced with a GTIN number (Global Trade Identification Number?) which is 14 digits...
