I'm actually suprised to hear this. I was just at a Retail-Link User Group
last week that was focused on RFID, and the presenters there mentioned the
trucking side was a blind spot as far as RFID visibility is concerned. Also,
EPCglobal seems to show the same thing on their diagrams - trucking might as
well be a "cloud". In what capacity has the transportation industry been
using it?

Or They've been lying to us....

The motor carrier industry has been using RFID and Satellite
tracking/communications for at least 10 years. In addition they use cell
for communication and scheduling. So has the rail industry. Both the
American Trucking Associations and the Association of American Railroads
were involved in an ISO Technical Committee (don't recall the number now, it
has been over 10 years since I was involved) that set the early rfid
standards for transportation.

One of ideas floated quite a while ago was that every item and packaging
unit would have an rfid tag, so when you put the item(s) in a box, the box
on the pallet, the pallet in the truck, the truck could communicate via
satellite the location of the product in the supply chain (our Military does
this to a limited extent today). So, rfid tag information via satellite is
already being done. Some of the companies involved include Savi and
Qualcomm.
