Subject: [EDI-L] The Cries of the Clueless

Taking off my moderator hat for a minute, and speaking as a list
subscriber...

I've been following the cries for help from the clueless "new to EDI" people
and also the responses that we've offered. (Myself included, so don't think
I'm assuming a sanctimonious attitude or anything like that.)

On a visceral level, it feels good to taunt the clueless, especially because
"we all know" that they just got an engagement from Accenture or Wipro or
some other firm to do "EDIs" for a client at a tenth of our salary and
another one of us is now looking for work because of this.

But are we really sure? Remember that old saw, "On the internet, nobody
knows you're a dog?" (Am I dating myself?) Is this too many questions for
one paragraph? :)

However, to be serious for a moment I'm wondering whether or not responses
like what we're giving are putting the readership of EDI-L in, shall we say,
a less complimentary light than before. We are doing the equivalent of
poking fun at the village idiot. Remember, this sword cuts both ways; your
next gig may be from a communication that you make on EDI-L, or it may be
broken by a "dogpile" that you participate in on EDI-L. How can you be
sure? And is this the brush you want to be painted with?

I invite everyone who is reading this, and who reads the next Srinivas' or
Sathya's pleas for help, and do one of two things:

* Emulate Mr. Douglas' measured, thoughtful and entirely appropriate reply
-- for my part, I plan on copying this back to any individual who uses the
"speed talk" method of gentle speech; or

* A stony silence.

Art, your reply is genius and I would like permission to add it (with
attribution) to the welcome message for EDI-L - not that anyone reads it or
anything. :)

Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, but the verbal barbs are making me a
tad uncomfortable. Any thoughts?
