2. Famous EDI engines include Inovis, Gentran, Extol, and Softshare. I recommend Softshare. It is the least expensive of the top-tier packages, and in my opinion, the most effective. EDI is best implemented as a stand-alone application, integrating with the application via flat-file, XML or database interface. It can reside on the application server, or on an independent server. EDI typically runs on mainframe, iSeries, Unix, Linux, or Windows platform. Softshare uses Windows at this time. 3. APIs will vary with the A - which stands for Application. You will need to give us more information on your A to get a useful answer to this question. Bonus Answer: It seems by your question that your company does not now have EDI expertise on staff. I strongly urge you to contract with a knowledgeable EDI consultant to steer you in the right direction and to help you with communication, mapping, trading partner, and integration issues. Not to do so will cost your employer too much money in delays, reworks, errors, penalties, and so on. Don't underestimate the size of the job, nor the skills required to get it right.
