Well JPR of Yahoo,
It seems you want to conceal your identity; i.e. company. I think it would be good if people that pose questions to the group at least inform the group if they are a demand side trading partner, supply side trading partner, consultant or service provider. According to GS1, the curator of all of those codes mentioned, the answer is use the code for GTIN. The GTIN encompasses all of the defined GS1 item identifiers: 08 Digits: UCC-8 or EAN-8 12 Digits U.P.C. or UCC-12 13 Digits UCC-13, EAN-13, or EAN 14 Digits UCC-14, EAN-14, UCC Case Code In the GTIN environment the IDs that are shorter in length than 14 are right justified and zero filled. As far as the codes you mentioned there have been several shortened versions of the GS1 Item ID codes employed over the years. They may omit the check digit but all of these are being phased out and are included in the GTIN. So to your first question, I don't know since you have not provided what industry or industry sector you are addressing. To your second question, if you are talking about the retail industry that is using GS1 item identifiers then the choice is the GTIN. It is up to you to understand and explain to your constituents on how the varieties of older UCC/EAN structures relate to the GTIN, and that is why people pay consultants to put it into understandable terminology. I am sure there are many on this list that can provide that information. Best Regards, James D.
