Yes, the supplier will generate the serialized bar code and report on it the ASN. There are several HL structures that can be followed: SOTPI, SOTIP, SOIP, SOPI, etc etc. The acceptable structure(s) are determined by the buyer. The buyer will determine the structure(s) based upon how their receiving process needs to reconcile against the ASN. The ASN is usually structured as: SOPI Shipment, Order, Pack, Item The Pack part represents the carton in which the goods are shipped. Each Carton usually has a unique 20 digit number. The label has a space at the bottom where this number is printed (in a bar code).
