Remember that EDI is just the transport component of a change in B2B
communications. Usually, there will be a related change in procedures to
accommodate the new documents and shorter lead times, etc...

How can you say there is 'no real guarantee on case count'?
I only have a few grocery clients, and they don't require ASNs, yet...

At some point, you have to KNOW what is being shipped. If every case will have
a label before it's loaded into the truck, then you have to know how many cases
are being shipped...

With some TPs, deviations from the stated ASN quantities results in very
expensive chargebacks - could be more than the value of the goods shipped !

The entire point of the ASN is to ensure that the electronic shipment matches
the contents of the truck.

As I mentioned before. many of our clients do not load the truck (or let it
leave) until they have received a positive 997 for their ASN.

I don't know about the receiving side, but I'm sure much more is automated -
Some TPs request Appointment times for delivery, with a specific Appointment
number' which must be added to the ASN.

Yes. If they are too small to handle EDI, they may find themselves with fewer
customers. I'm not sure about your relationship with the brokers, but it can
certainly complicate things... What happens if you have to ship goods from
different locations? How do you tell the broker what to ship? Who prints the
labels and how do they get to the broker? etc, etc, etc...

You may have to continue with the broker as is, and send the ASN on their
behalf...

There are additional documents (940/945?) that deal with warehouse releases for
TPLs (Third Party Logistic providers)...
