>"When EDI is done right, it is a lights-off activity, managed only by >exception." Another almost completely off-topic anecdote for the 'veterans'. At the beginning of the 90's we installed one of our first PC-based EDI Gateways for a well-known international firm. It was designed for completely hands-off operation; with all operator communication being through a console on their main Vax system. It was a great success, and ran for a couple of years without giving any trouble. Then the guy responsible for it decided to realize a lifetime ambition, and took a sabbatical to tour the Far East on one of his BMW motorbikes, thus removing himself very effectively from all communication. The system continued to work perfectly until one day a message popped up on the Vax console announcing that "EDI system backup streamer approaching capacity - change tape". No problem. All this was documented. Unfortunately the EDI PC didn't seem to be in its designated location. The messages about changing the tape became increasingly frequent and strident, but the PC could not be found. The search became more desperate as days passed. Eventually they called in a specialist, who had to use an RF tracking device to trace the periodic bursts of data through the ducting until he finally located the PC - in a cleaners' cupboard completely hidden by trolleys and other junk. I guess this is a success story - of sorts.
