Earl (et al)....

I've seen SOP - but purely because My TP is not following our ASN
spec... They're sending us the pack with the UCC128 number but then
neglecting (or just ignoring) the Item level of the ASN....

As for Michael's post about "Although personally I would never use "O"
level above either P or I, I'd use a PRF segment at the Item level
whereever that ends up." - there's a problem with this....

Some TPs want the typical SOPI structure - but even using that SOPI
structure, you can list (as long as the TP allows it) multiple "O"
level segments above the P and/or the I segment.

For example, we do not require a single shipment for a single ASN for
a single PO.... with the globalization of the manufacturing side of
things, we may get a shipment that contains items from multiple POs.
So we'll have an ASN that is SOPIOPIOPIOPI etc.... The TP includes
the original PO number in the PRF segment in the Order HL. This
allows for multiple header records (as needed) with the appropriate
detail records for the Pack and Item levels.... This allows (in our
case) a simpler movement of the data into our WM system.

Truth is, each case and situation will be a little different....

To Walter's ORIGINAL question - the answer has been given multiple
times - the Pack level is for the carton identification - even if it's
as simple as "1 of 5" or the normal UCC128 carton label number. The
Item level is to reference what is contained within that carton
referenced in the Pack level.

But something else comes to mind, Walter - are you the sender or the
receiver of the ASN...? If you're the sender, you need to send the TP
what it is they want. If they don't want the pack level information
and your translation can handle not including it, then don't send
it.... Or, just still send it along as "extra data" and the TP can
either translate and move the data or not - their choice.

However, if you are the RECEIVER of the ASN, you're in the driver's
seat for this.... If you require the UCC128 lable at the pack level,
then the TP needs to toe the line and meet YOUR specification. It is
their problem and issue to comply with YOUR spec. You should not have
to change YOUR spec for a single TP. What's the old adage - "the
customer is always right"....? Well, you ARE that customer and YOUR
spec is what is right and needs to be complied with.

My 2 bits on this....
