I spoke with the NMFTA just now. There is no change in their operations.
You can call them and they will give you a code or two at no charge.
Call 866-411-6332 and press 1, then 4, I believe.)

As EDI professionals, it behooves each one of us to defend the
standards. Use of proper SCAC codes is very important. Organizations
that use SCAC codes should buy the book or CD from the NMFTA. My
organization just bought another book this year. If clients want us to
take shortcuts, here is what to do. Do not "just say OK." Instead,
engage them in an intelligent conversation. Describe the benefits they
receive when the standards are used correctly. If they insist on the
shortcut, go ahead. At least you've done you job as a professional. I
recommend making a note of your recommendation in appropriate documents.

For truckers that do not have SCAC codes we are left to issue a code. Do
so and apply the correct qualifier. BTW, there are companies that
require valid SCAC codes. Otherwise the trucker may not transport their
cargo.

Where did you get that information please?

I checked with http://www.nmfta.org/ and saw no difference. I will call
them Monday and verify.

It's better to go to the Carrier.

The NMFTA (National Motor Freight Traffic Association) is pretty tough
to work with.

Since Freight has been deregulated SCAC codes are now not held by them
any longer and companies can basically use whatever they want in most
cases. There are some exceptions. As a result when I consulted their
list at a clients site, the list had shrunk from a phone book sized
tome to 2 pages!! They didn't even have FEDEX listed!
