Patrick, Oh, yes, I'm aware of the even more distressingly high cost of the e-version of the book. Even WITH quarterly updates.... Think of how poorly sales of, say, an other e-version of a book would sell if you charged that much. And yes, I also agree that if the guides were far more available and affordable - more people would readily purchase and use these standards and guides. My current EDI standard guide - for X12/V4010 - dates from 1997. At 10 years old, it fits My needs and allows Me to do My job functions. But even that standard isn't as costly as the SCAC guides. One needs to not look very far to find hundreds (and even thousands?) of examples of forms and guides and publications relating to various job functions that are available for free - everything from the simplest local, state or federal government publications and guidelines (such as DMV, IRS, and so on) to more complex users guides and manuals for many of the appliances we all use day in and day out (our cell phones, PDA units, Bluetooth devices) and so on..... All are available for FREE or a minimal and nominal fee in both e-version and bound versions.

The SCAC listings can also be purchased in electronic format on CD for the paltry price of... are you ready for this?... $820!! Of course that does include quarterly updates. That is nearly 5 times that cost of the print version. I think that if these organizations that publish these standards really wanted to ensure that people would actually use them, they would consider reasonable pricing for copies of the relevant standards. I would hope that someone from NMFTA (and DISA for that matter), is seeing this and would take a moment to think over their policies of charging unreasonable rates.
