>Why on Earth would anyone care if an interconnect were used? In the UK the major VAN's will only supply tracking information on data movement within their own system; there is no transfer of file status information over an interconnect. If I send an order to ABC on my own VAN I can see when it was placed in his mailbox, and when he picked it up, which can sometimes be useful to settle small disputes. Over an interconnect I only know when it was moved to the network bridge. However, since it is Friday, I will vote officially for one of the financial conspiracy theories instead :-) Incidentally, I believe OFTP is normally used for VAN bridging in the UK, and this is a protocol which does provide end to end responses. The failure of the VAN's to implement these is open to a number of interpretations.
