You and Patrice are missing the point. The X12 standard is as open and available as EDIFACT. One you pay for through your taxes, and the other is paid for directly. You don't get either until they're paid for.

I have implemented EDIFACT projects all over Europe, Asia, Australia and Central and South America. Even the USBPA is using EDIFACT for customs, So the question is: Why insist on staying in the past and isolated? Private interests? Business? Selfishness? ..Go figure. Meantime you have to pay $5,000+ for the X12 standards (per version that is) so good luck!
