First of all, the vast majority of companies using X12 in North America do
not pay the $5,000 for the standards.

Second of all, the vast majority of companies using X12 in North America are
not making a conscious decision about what standards to use, they are simply
responding to a decree from a trading partner.

Third of all, notwithstanding the holier-than-thou bleating about the
justification for that cost, methinks the $5,000 for the standards provides
a barrier to entry for upstart developers. (I am not generally a conspiracy
theorist, but the Drummond Group disabused me of that re: X12 standards.)

Cheers,

Paul

nonpublic/expensive

There's something I don't get here. The choice is paying $5,000/version for
a
standard that is used in the US only vs. $0 for one that is used everywhere
else. Isn't that a no-brainer? Can some explain Why not use EDIFACT instead
of
X12 in the US as in the rest of the world?
Thanks,
Ricardo

But, EDIFACT is public, independently of the way you contribute to UN.

While X12 is not public.

For me, it does answer the question ;-)
