Thanks you all for taking your time to give me your opinion.  I will consider 
your suggestions.  So far, I found majority to supporting XML (3 vs 0).  Anyone 
against XML schema versus Positional flat file?

I am assuming you are translating X12/EDIFACT to either XML or Positional, then 
use SQL maps to load the db?  If that is the plan, then I would use XML for 
readability when you are trying to troubleshoot data being passed.  My 2ยข
