Michael, your comment re the ability to say no is the prime motivator for me
staying independent. And you are also correct, if the client doesn't have
any skin in the game, why should you as a contractor work for free. Would
you go to work at a company as an FTE and agree not to get paid a salary
until 6 months in the future.

I have been an independent consultant since 1994.  I cannot imagine saying
'yes' to any proposal which involves six months of work without payment. 
(The ability to say 'no' has been important to me actually remaining
independent all these years).

Forget my financial needs: If the client is not financially vested in the
project  -  has some skin in the game - the whole project will likely fail
and *everyone*  will be pounding sand anyway.
