Yes, there is. It’s called e-Prescribing which is included in the Medicare Modernization Act of a few years back. It requires the use of various NCPDP standards.

We all know the difference between faxes and digital data transmission. My point was that until there is a secure and simple way for a hospital to send test results to a doctor or a doctor to send consultation requests, etc to other doctors, faxes will never die. Until doctors can see the advantage of HL7 and all parties will be able to send and receive HL7 messages, faxes will continue. I also install EMR software for doctors and faxing is a huge waste of time. Unfortunately, in many instances, there is no better replacement... yet. Pharmacies still require hand-signed prescriptions and Labs still require archaic forms.
