The problem with the existing version is that it isn't free software,
which means that a number of people are unable to distribute it. Part of
my reason for working on CSM support, amongst other things, is that I'm
trying to improve adoption and acceptance of UEFI by getting people to
use it and ship it in virtual machines. I want to get to the point where
people find problems on real hardware, then feel empowered to boot OVMF
in a virtual machine, test and fix bugs as appropriate. For that to
happen, OVMF really needs to be shippable as *part* of the OS
distribution that people are using. Otherwise the whole plan falls
apart.

So having non-free dependencies is extremely problematic.
