That is my stereotype too.  But a USNEWS poll (n=13,130) shows Gore
winning clear majorities among those with less than a high school
eductation (59%) and those with post graduate degrees (52%).  High School
grads went slightly for Bush and those with some college or a college
degree went for Bush.

So Gore wins among the least and most educated.  Bush wins the rest.

Gore also got a fairly clear majority (51% vs 47%) of the over
60 vote and a small majority of the under 29 vote.  Bush took the rest.

Gore gets the oldest and youngest voters, Bush gets everyone else.

Given this information, and unsubstaintiated (to my knowledge) reports
that the Gore campaign was busing in nursing home residents to vote,
problems of the elderly seem to be a much more likely explanation for
ballot marking problems than education.


Gore also won consistently among minorities and lower income groups.  In
those cases the stereotype is dead on.
