I grew up in western MA, and the principle word user in my family came from near 
Boston, with
experience living in southern Vt.  'Notch' was used as you describe.

Also, the name of the road/pass south from Amherst, MA over the Holyoke range toward 
Mt.
Holyoke College is called 'the Notch.'

the name, Dixville Notch, makes perfect explanatory sense to me :)
