Javier is more-or-less right. It stands for Customer Information Control System
and was developed during 1968 but released to customers in 1969 - we celebrated
its 30th birthday a few weeks ago!
Interestingly, it and most other IBM software at the time was also Open Source.
IBM stopped this practice because customers kept making changes to it,
destroying reliability and making servicing difficult.
