FYI, iPlanet is a SUN product from an alliance with Netscape and as part of
the AOL merger, they obtained it.
http://www.iplanet.com/alliance/about/
iPlanet does not use any of the RI code. In fact, I do not know of any app
server using the RI code. All app servers just code off the spec. Most app
servers have been around before the RI code came into the picture.
What iPlanet and other app servers have become are plain "J2EE" licensees.
That means they can use the J2EE trademark for badging and have to pay a 3%
royalty back to SUN.
What the other poster was commenting on was on NOT selling a RI license to
iPlanet :: he was commenting on the fact that if you approach SUN for a J2EE
app server for production, they will sell you iPlanet.
And since iPlanet is their commercial offering, they would not want the J2EE
RI which is essentially a micky mouse test environment, competing against
their commercial product.
