While a good bright light (however that is come by) is important, I don't find the magnifiers on these swing arm lamps terribly useful for fine work. The problem is that viewing angle can be critical and putting the glass in the sweet spot is fidgety.
A head worn magnifier is far better in my opinion. I use a product with the brand name "Head Loupe" which has several interchangeable lenses with varying degrees of magnification. Wouldn't be without it.
