No problem to shutdown K3 from the PS during normal operation, except that the last used frequency and controls wouldn't be memorized. No chance for any hardware or software trouble. The UPS or battery only would allow you to finish off the QSO, no other benefits. Even the interruption during FW update is not deadly for K3. (At least for SN 516, switched off only by the PS since March 2008)
