You are looking at two different KXPD3 documents, Kent. Earlier KXPD3 all had the "firm" spring by default. After initial shipments and customer feedback, it was decided to build KXPD3s with the "medium" spring and include a firmer and lighter spring so the feel could be adjusted by changing springs. For those who already had KXPD3s with the firm spring, an upgrade kit was created that is documented by the KXPD3 UPGRADE KIT manual. That kit contained a medium and light spring for them to use for a lighter feel.
That's why the upgrade kit document is a few days newer the original KXPD3 document. At the same time as the springs were changed, improved contacts were phased into the KXPD3. The new contacts are also included in the upgrade kit for those who had the early KXPD3s. If you got a KXPD3 with three springs, you do not need the upgrade kit.
