Again I understand that this would not be for everyone, but I see a
use for the feature which of course should be 'optional'.

The problem with "optional" features is that they take development
time for the benefit of a very small number of users and get in the
way of larger projects that benefit the larger group. In addition
something like a 'pin' can too easily render a rig inoperative to
its owner if something goes wrong. I don't know of any amateur rig
with a pin or firmware lockout and I certainly would not want such
a capability in any rig I owned.

If you need to prevent your rig from being operated by those who should
not be doing so, unplug the power cable and take it with you or store
it someplace secure.

Scott,

Personally?...I tend to agree with you. In my situation, I set up portable
under my Motorhome awning and I could use a 'Lockout' feature daily. I do
realize this is not for the shall we say majority, however I felt your
question was a valid one.

I use the current K3 partial lockout feature and if FW was available to
allow as you suggest a 'Pin' type lockout of the full K-Line then I would
use that feature.

Again I understand that this would not be for everyone, but I see a use for
the feature which of course should be 'optional'.

I will not validate the other comments I have read by commenting further.

Good question, I hope Elecraft at least give your question serious
consideration.

Scott,

Which is it? I've read your post on at least two different lists.....

Do you want to prevent a thief from using your radio? Prevent him from
stealing it, lock the door.

Do you want to keep your kids (and their friends) from messing with it?
Your own kids should know better and also, lock the door.

Or you want to keep your irresponsible club members (lids) from messing
with
the settings? As has been pointed out, Elecraft has provided a means of
'locking' the CMP, MIC GAIN, and POWER settings, and it works very well.
Use it, and a little training would go a long way to acquaint your friends
on the basics of how the radio works, and what the controls do, such as
filters, and band width. A few experiments with the NB and NR and the
NOTCH
are also well advised. Also, a quick SAVE settings with the K3 Utility
will
help if things get too far out of hand. (I loaned my K3 to a good friend a
while back, and when I got it back a couple of weeks later, he'd
re-configured it to work very muck like his OMNI VI! I re-loaded my
config
file, and was back to normal, he bought a K3.)

My K3 has been to many field day and special events and racked up
thousands
of contacts with no ill affects, and the membership has become very
confident with it. I feel certain that this has been partially
responsible
for several members buying K3s and other Elecraft equipment.

But, please, "we don't need no stinkin' PINS!"

BTW: For what it's worth, my Smart phone, doesn't actually have a PIN, I
just swipe an icon across the screen, just about anyone with a half a
brain
can make it work. It' more of a nuisance than any protection.

Bill, I am not suggesting you need to &^%* unlock the *&^&$# radio every
*&^%$ time you want to %$#* play radio... I am suggesting a way to make
it so LIDS at club meetings or *&^% ham operators at Field Day don't do
something they should not do... agn, just like a cell or smart phone...
that's all... Matt, I will look into the other settings, I was not aware
of that... TU

Bill... I was asked WHY?... I then gave some reasons why it would be
helpful or useful to have a lock or PIN... I also said, it may not be for
everyone and an op out or turn on/off for those people who didn't want it
should be available
We have passwords on our computers and email accounts, do you lock up your
computer or do you leave your internet on for hackers to get in and cause
problems???
I just gave a suggestion on something I THINK would be of use to me... I
don't think it is constructive treating me like a pinata just because you
have no use for a PIN...

enjoy ham radio... I do

Scott
