5w is not enough if we get out of line of site. On a recent ride we could not open the designated repeater ~30miles away, K6IS, with 5w units, an FT-60 and/or the Beofengs. We all run either a Diamond or Comet antenna, so it was not just ducktails or screw on antenna.
The FT-10 did so easily, at I think 10w. Min power could not open it.
