I use my K3 with a Mac and use it with both the Elecraft Mac utility and Windows apps without problem. I'm using an FTDI-based USB Serial converter with it. The first thing I would check is the type of USB Serial cable you're using: There have been many fake Prolific cables sold over the years and those can be very problematic, even causing the type of behavior you're seeing.
