I would have guessed that this was it. If you have a strong RF source in the neighborhood, then incoming power reflected back from the K3 would look like forward power from the rig, and might be enough to trigger it. I have a 50 kW AM BC station that I can see from my antenna, and lots of 'funny' things that happen here are explained by this.
