Ron,
As well as checking the 10m beacons, I also find it useful to tune across
the Citizens Band just below 10m for possible openings. But don't be fooled
if you do not hear anything because the skip can be very selective
sometimes, meaning that a path might not be open between you and say a
beacon, but is open between you and somebody living not too many miles away
from that beacon. He is just listening because he thinks that the band is
dead. Same thing happens on 6m and even down on 15m. Nothing wrong with
calling a few CQs on a 'dead' band, surprising who comes back sometimes.
