Do you have BOTH plugs connected to the P3? You need to use the cable that has not one, but two DE-9 connectors - this allows the data to flow from the USB interface through the P3 and then back to the K3S. Without it, I would expect exactly the behavior you describe. In fact, I experienced exactly the behavior, which is why I know.
Be sure to use the double DE9 cable, not the one with just a single DE9. 73!
