In my case my DX-20 had not yet been on the air when the neighbor across the street complained about me wiping out his stereo system just after my Dad helped me put up a 40m vertical up on the roof. After the neighbor found out I did not even have my transmitter he stopped complaining. Word got out ( my Dad?) and no one in the neighborhood ever complained again.

I found out two days later when a ham I'd never met copied my callsign off his
TV. He looked me up in the callbook (I was a few blocks from his place),
introduced himself, and helped me find and repair the cable. I ended up with a
clean signal and a great Elmer.

But this is not the good ol' days, apparently.
