It does sound as though your problem is caused by a failure of the switch
which is part of the headphone jack. If the switch has failed and stays
'open' you could still get audio out of the headphone jack, but when
removing  the headphone plug  the audio will not be switched through to the
internal nor external speaker ciurcuits. The switch in both the original and
in a replacement headphone jack in my K2 failed in this manner remaining
'open'.

Howdy .. My real problem is that when there are no headphones plugged into
the front and nothing hooked to the "ext spkr" in the back I'm not getting
anything through the onboard spkr in my K2/100.  This is true of the spkr
in
the QRP lid as well when swapped out.  This happened suddenly last
evening.
The internal speaker was working fine, and then I noticed it wasn't
working
later in the evening.
