Actually, I have an IC-703 and like the concept. It could have been a great
radio. However, almost everyone who owns one has had the dreaded IC101 failure
at least once and had to send it back for the customary ~$77.00 repair, me
included. It so bad, that I'm afraid to use mine for fear I'll turn it on and
the transmitter will be dead.

I guess I was a little hard on Icom. However, I have friends who are die-hard
Icom fans who have complained to me about the quality of Icom's radios over the
years. Personally, if you burn me and a whole bunch of other people I know
(most IC-703 owners), you'll likely not get my business again. What really
bothers me is that Icom America did nothing to try to fix the problem other
than repair the radio under warranty, which only meant that it might happen
again out of warranty. They did issue a couple of mods they said would solve
the design problem (again, this goes back to engineering and QA), however even
with the mods in place, IC101 can and does fail regularly, leaving you with a
great receiver and no transmitter. This happened to me. I guess those who keep
buying Icom are just like those who keep buying cars made by Fiat - they would
rather work on them than use them. (Uh-Oh, I'm sure I just made the Fiat owners
on the list mad. Oh-well, flame suit back on)

Or rake leaves in my case. Its just not worth worrying about. To paraphrase
what I tell my kids on a trip "It'll get there when it gets there!". Elecraft
is NOT the type of company that is going to be irresponsible to its customers
(Uh-oh, there I go being sycophantic again; glad I already have my flame suit
on!)
