Ok. Thanks to Tom, David, Al and Ron.
I am going to try 'solder flow' method first. If that isn't
satisfactory,
I will try the to splice the lead as plan B.
After getting the lead length thing out of my mind, and getting
cathode and
anode correct, I can see that there is no way to install it wrong.
The density here is pretty striking sometimes....

As for the orientation, it doesn't matter! Yes, the polarity must
be right
for the diffuser to work, but the lead and pad arrangement is such
that
they'll be polarized correctly as long as the front side is facing
outward.
