The 'solder flow' worked. No need for plan B.

Now, I have one last question (ha ha). In reading the Application note on the LCD, it mentions a film that is on the back of some LCDs that can be seen as horizontal stripes when held up to light. I don't see any stripes, so far so good.

The note also mentions that the back of the LCD is solid white. My LCD back
is silver not white. Is this OK?

Ok. Thanks to Tom, David, Al and Ron.

I am going to try 'solder flow' method first. If that isn't satisfactory,
I will try the to splice the lead as plan B.

After getting the lead length thing out of my mind, and getting cathode and
anode correct, I can see that there is no way to install it wrong.

The density here is pretty striking sometimes....

Thanks again for your help.

I can't speak to the lead length problem, Tony, but your "fix" sounds FB.

As for the orientation, it doesn't matter! Yes, the polarity must be right for the diffuser to work, but the lead and pad arrangement is such that they'll be polarized correctly as long as the front side is facing outward.
