I can't speak to the lead length problem, Tony, but your "fix" sounds FB.
As for the orientation, it doesn't matter! Yes, the polarity must be right for the diffuser to work, but the lead and pad arrangement is such that they'll be polarized correctly as long as the front side is facing outward.
