Thanks for the comments.  I solved the dilemma by replacing the phone jack,
but hard
wired the switch closed on the PC board.  There is audio in the speaker and
the 
headphones regardless of the phone jack status.  I built up a small audio
amp which I 
connect to the external speaker jack.  If I don't want speaker audio, I turn
off the amp.
By the way, the amp feeds two speakers on either side of the radio desk
which sorta 
gives me stereo.  I notice the K3 has a 1/4" phone jack.  And, I have a K3
on order to 
deliver sometime late June or early July.
