Thanks, that makes sense to me - that's for the explanation.
I have a mono headset with mic, intended for an IP phone and that uses a stereo plug, although I hadn't noticed. It's a nice lightweight headset too, shame its only a mono earpiece.

No, I believe it is because most of the computer mics use a stereo plug. A mono jack would short out the ring and cause some mics to not work properly. Using a stereo jack for mono signals is usually a good idea, particularly if one does not know what can be placed on the ring contact.
