Correct. The jack is physically a stereo jack, but the audio path is MONO (tip) only.

The de facto standard for PC sound cards is to have electret "bias" fed, via a resistor to the ring. Dynamic microphones normally use mono plugs, which short the bias. Electret ones normally connect ring and tip, and phantom feed the power to the element.
