The cable it seems does have a "special" feature as was kindly pointed out to me, heck what do I know I just included it when I ordered my K3.
Apparently "it has the correct gender of connecting screws, and will fasten directly on to the K3's back panel DE-9 connector. Other USB to Serial Adapters have jack nuts on the 9-pin end, and therefore require an intervening serial cable." But this is absolute madness...
