Are you by chance running Emailer in Classic under OS X? I have found that when running in Classic, the Temp Incoming freeze doesn't always freeze Emailer, rather it just stalls the unpacking. In addition, when a bad message is hit, Emailer seems to be able to handle it on a 2nd attempt when running in Classic. Since you mention that most of the time, the messages are AOL, and AOL is key to one of the known temp incoming freeze problems...
