Or could this app just use the HTTP interface?

For that matter, if somebody did a Baton Mail-like app that on one side 
did the HTML interfacing, and on the other side the POP/SMTP interfacing, 
you could use any email client to send and receive your AOL email. In 
that case, I'd suggest PowerMail.
