If there was no Type/Creator code that came along with the attachment (and there wouldn't be if it came from a PC), then Emailer lets the Mac make the decision as to what file type it is. It will use the File Exchange settings in your control panels.
If there is a 3 letter file extension that is what File Exchange goes off of. If there is no 3 letter extension, than it will default it to Unknown type. But I have seen it rather than choose Unknown it uses some wacky off the wall choice instead.
