I thought of this (although I don't know why it would have changed 
allegiance!) which is why when I reselected Emailer in the Internet 
Control Panel I went so far as to use the "Select" button and use the 
dialogue box to select the original version.

I thought of trashing the Mail icon and just putting an alias of Emailer 
in the startup folder. 

What exactly do you mean by pasting an alias on the Mail icon?
