Doug -

You've got a whole host of issues wrapped up in your message. Let me see
if I can help. Others may very well have differing opinions.

Processor: a slow G3 won't cut it with OS X. A fast G3 is usable. It will
run, make no mistake, but it will take too long to do ordinary things
like draft menus to allow real use. In particular, I have found a 256 MHz
G3 laptop to be too painfully slow.

RAM: 256 MB of RAM is the *minimum* for OS 10.2.6. More is better. RAM is
cheap, but get quality stuff. Unix is intolerant of faulty RAM and can
lead you to all kinds of problems and issues.

G4 vs. G5: A couple of points here. First, the G4 boxes that Apple is
selling right now, last time I checked, were ones that would boot into OS
9. If you want a no hassle mailer platform, get a G4 that will boot into
OS 9.1 or 9.2. It will still run OS X, of course, and still run Classic
(an emulation of OS 9 running as an application/process in OS X). But
there is comfort in being able to revert. So far, I'd say a G5 is a
high-end user's tool: video and graphics processing, developing software.
Until software catches up, a G5 is really only useful to graphics/video
pros and those of us who can't stand not to have the Latest and Greatest.

OS 10.2.X vs. 10.3.X: I can confirm that Emailer 2.0 v3 works in Classic
under all versions of 10.2.X through 10.2.6. No one except Apple and
maybe some beta testers knows if it will work under OS 10.3 ("Panther").
Apple says Panther will run on all G4s.

Hard Drive Capacity: 1.5 GB of free space is only marginally enough. OS X
is Unix. Unix creates dozens of cache files where it temporarily stores
stuff. Even if there is room for the install, there's not going to be
room for the installed software and all of OS X's cache, swap and VM
files. Running out of hard disk space in Unix is like a roadkill skunk
late on a hot afternoon. You don't even want to be in the neighborhood.
Hard drives are cheap. Buy a bigger one. Besides, where are you going to
put your iTunes and your iPhotos?

<Heresy Warning>
Now make no mistake, I love Emailer, and I use it every day, but then I
loved AppleWorks (not the Mac version, the Apple II version). Software
breaks over time. Hardware breaks over time. We all need to be developing
an exit strategy for our email client application. Some day soon no new
computer is going to run OS 9. Some day in the next few years Classic is
no longer going to be supported, or changes in Classic's hardware
implementation will break. We can all keep our old computers and nurse
them along. But consider that the decision to move to a new G4 or a G5
represents a chance to develop an Emailer exit strategy...
</Heresy Warning>

I hope this helps. YMMV.
