Mac OS 9.1 & 9.2 are NOT faster than 8.6. If you mean "speed" when you 
say you are expecting "performance enhancement" then you will not want to 
upgrade to any higher numbered Mac OS. On your Powerbook, Mac OS X would 
crawl very slowing, whereas OS 8.6 would zip along. More memory might 
help, but if you're already pretty happy with the performance, I would 
say just stay there. I'm sure there are some feature enhancements with OS 
9, like being able to run iTunes, but I can't think of many.
