I'm not sure its manditory. I just know that some apps won't launch if the enclosing folder is the same name as the application. But remember, just because you stripped the word "folder" from all your folders, does not mean that the folder is now named the same as the application file inside it. Many companies put the trademark symbol into the application name, or use slightly different names. Just keep the dual name issue in mind when you start using OS X.
