FWIW, I have written a script that, on my OS X machine, will open an 
Internet connection, tell Emailer to check an account, then disconnect. I 
would like to post it with my Applescripts, but it would be nice to have 
folks test it first. 

So, please let me know if you can do so. . . . Then I'll post it and 
inform the list.
