Cable is not inherently faster than DSL, nor the other way around. you 
just have to compare the offerings. In some neighborhooods cable is 
better, in others DSL is better. 
You can find out what other people say about the different services, and 
also see what your service choices are at:
http://WWW.DSLreports.com

In many cases, you will find that there are a lot more companies 
servicing your area than you thought. 
I do recommend that you avoid "PPPoE" style service if at all possible. 
Unless you have a router, it's just more bother.
